    Description

    1874 letter on inspector general's department letterhead, singed by Nelson Davis (1821-1890) as Inspector General and directed to the Secretary of War.  Davis graduated from west Point in 1846 and had Mexican War service; during the Civil war he was colonel of the 7th Massachusetts and then in staff services.  He became Inspector General in 1885.  Letter acknowledges appointment of John Ayers as post trader at Fort McRae New Mexico.  Mounted to album page at left.
