1943 FRENCH MOROCCO "5 Francs" Note >WORLD WAR II >US & British OCCUPATION Issue
    Description
This is a real war veteran
    "Cinq"
    or
    "5 Francs"
    note from
    "French"
Morocco. It is from the first Allied World War II issue of banknotes for Morocco.
By the terms of the Treaty of Fez in 1912, France established a
    "Protectorate"
over Morocco. This lasted until March of 1956 when Morocco once again became Independent.
This note is dated January 8, 1943 during the
    "Protectorate".
Actually, it was issued during the occupation of Morocco by British and American Troops. It was printed in the United States.
    "French Morocco"
had been liberated and Frenchmen were still nominally in charge, but this French government was no longer under the control of European
    "Vichy"
    France.

Morocco was important during World War II. The first American troops to fight in the European theater landed there on November 8, 1942 and had to subdue the
    "Vichy"
French. Many lives were lost on both sides. This was necessary because the ports were outside the Mediterranean and could not easily be blocked or attacked by the enemy. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill held a very important meeting there, where
    "Unconditional Surrender"
was announced as an allied war aim.
Still, Morocco may best be remembered as the location of both
    "Casablanca"
    and
    "Marrakesh".
    Back:
    Five-pointed star.
    The Note:
A veteran that worked its way through the war and emerged dirty but uninjured. It has no edge or body tears and no pinholes. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
